Master of Arts in Education Showcase
Below is a showcase of my coursework which I have completed during the Master of Arts in Education program at Michigan State University. As part of my concentration area in Literacy Education, I took several courses which have developed my ability to administer literacy assessments, expand my knowledge on teaching reading and writing, and target students' individual literacy needs. I also have a secondary concentration in Special Education and took several courses on differentiating instruction and co-teaching within the inclusive setting throughout the MAED program.
Analyzing Literacy Data
In my literacy courses, I was required to analyze students' reading assessments through case studies and create goals for instruction. I also developed lesson plans tailored to the students' individual needs based off of their reading data.
Analyzing Student's Reading Data
I created a project which required me to analyze students' literacy data, create goals for instruction, and recommend instructional strategies to help improve the students' literacy areas of need. Through this project I learned how to administer and analyze students' literacy data (i.e. basic reading inventories, phonics inventories, fry high frequency word lists, and spelling inventories) and research based strategies to teach within the classroom to build students' literacy skills.
Literacy Case Study
I put together a case study on a struggling literacy learner by analyzing their areas of need through reading inventories. Through this case study, I analyzed my students' literacy needs by administering several reading assessments, developed two individualized lessons to target his needs, implemented both lessons, and administered post assessments to assess his learning.
Literacy Strategies
In my literacy courses, I completed several research based projects focused on research based strategies to improve students' reading and writing skills through self regulation and strategic processing.
Teaching Strategic Processes in Reading
Using Weebly, I worked with a group with two peers to create a website which highlighted how to teach strategic processing in reading. We used the text, Teaching Strategic Processes in Reading by Janice F. Almasi and Susan King Fullerton within the website to explain the following: strategic processing, response to intervention, assessments, word recognition, and overall reading comprehension.
Self Regulated Strategy Development in Writing
|
I created a presentation on Self-Regulated Strategy Development in writing during TE 848, Writing Assessment and Instruction. SRSD is a process which fosters students ability to independently set goals for themselves during the writing process and improve their overall writing skills. Through this project I had the opportunity to research SRSD and put the information together into a presentation to share with peers and colleagues. |
Special Education Practices
Through obtaining a concentration in Special Education, I was able to further develop my knowledge within the field of special education. With inclusion on the rise, I learned about the various co-teaching models within an inclusion setting and how to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of my students. I also learned about putting Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports along with Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavioral Intervention Plans into place to address students' behavior concerns.
Professional Development Presentation
Co-Teaching Project
I had to co-teach a lesson with one of our colleagues during one of my special education courses. Since I was currently co-teaching at the time of this course, it was especially relevant to my professional career. Through this project I learned how to successfully co-plan and co-teach a mathematics lesson in an inclusive setting.

Behavior Intervention Plans
I created a final research project on Behavior Intervention Plans for one of my courses on behavior management. Through this project, I learned about what constitutes a strong Intervention Plan, how to write up BIPs, and how to evaluate their effectiveness.
